When looking for a storage facility here are a few things to consider:

Security – does the facility offer the security you need to feel safe about storing your valuable with them.  Do they have an up-to-date security systems like electronic keypads?  Is the facility gated?  Is the lighting adequate? Do they have security cameras and recording 24/7?  Do they limit access hours for better control?  Are there emergency numbers posted?  Do they offer storage insurance?

Cleanliness/Maintenance – ask for a tour of the facility so you can determine the level of cleanliness and maintenance.  Check to see that doors and locks all function properly.  If storing in a non-climate unit look for unkept yards or trash as this attracts rodents.  Ask the frequency of exterminating.

Climate Controlled Units – this is important if you are storing moisture or temperature sensitive items like cloth, leather, wood, paper, pictures.  Climate controlled can mean many things from air circulation to true climate control in which the temperature and humidity levels are maintained 24/7.  Of these, humidity control is the most important element to control moisture and inhibit the growth of mold/mildew.

Customer Service/Knowledge – the staff should be friendly, helpful and knowledgable about storage and any anxillary items they sell.  They should explain the lease, access hours,  and any other pertinent information you may need to make your storage experience a positive one.

For items that are not sensitive to heat, cold or moisture a less expensive, non-climate unit is probably suitable but when storing valuables many facilities may be cheap but may not offer everything you need to adequately protect your items.  It is always best to make sure you are comfortable with the facility and the staff and remember cheaper may not be better.
